        Born and raised in the Bear River First Nation community, Theresa Meuse is a First Nations educator and advisor. She is the author of The Sharing Circle, and has contributed articles to the Mi'kmaq Anthology (volumes 1 and 2) and the book L'sitkuk: The Story of the Bear River Mi'kmaw Community. Theresa lives in Elmsdale, Nova s: 7. Darlene A. Ricker is a freelance writer who contributes to the Micmac and Maliseet Nations News and edits The Bear River Beat, the L’sitkuk community newsletter. She received an Atlantic Writing Competition award for L’sitkuk from the Writer’s Federation of Nova Scotia.

      Set in contemporary times, a young Mi'kmaw drum singer and a Euro-Nova Scotian biologist meet at dusk each day to count a population of endangered Chimney Swifts (kaktukopnji'jk). They quickly struggle with their differing views of the world. Through humour and story, the characters must come to terms with their own gifts and challenges as they dedicate efforts to the birds.   It also features two poems read by Shalan Joudry, a Mi’kmaq poet, storyteller, and ecologist, living in L’sitkuk, Nova Scotia.       L’sitkuk (Bear River First Nation) held a four-day gathering/conference the last week of May that brought artistic, cultural, and environmental themes to the forefront of the community.
